Urbanization and artificial light at night reduce the functional connectivity of migratory aerial habitat

چکیده

Flying animals use aerial habitats to forage, communicate and travel. However, human activities that fragment habitat with built structures, noise, chemical or light pollution, may limit the ability of wildlife airspace efficiently. Applying landscape connectivity theory could reveal how long-distance migrants respond sources fragmentation along their migratory routes. Artificial at night is a major component urbanization fragments dark skies across North America. Attraction nocturnal urban well documented, but species-specific responses, especially throughout full migration from breeding wintering grounds, are not. We tested hypotheses about movements in relation artificial using highly nocturnal, Nearctic-Neotropical avian migrant (Eastern whip-poor-will Antrostomus vociferus). applied resource selection framework multiple spatial scales explore whether GPS-tracked birds (n = 10) responded general, specifically, during flights. found little evidence attraction were correlated difficult disentangle, generally avoided areas selected dark-connected for Migratory stopovers (locations where 20) paused least one night), located almost exclusively dark, rural areas. Our results illustrate considering both terrestrial elements can improve our understanding what facilitate movements.

Continent-wide tracking to determine migratory connectivity and tropical habitat associations of a declining aerial insectivore.

North American birds that feed on flying insects are experiencing steep population declines, particularly long-distance migratory populations in the northern breeding range. We determine, for the first time, the level of migratory connectivity across the range of a songbird using direct tracking of individuals, and test whether declining northern populations have higher exposure to agricultural...

the effect of functional/notional approach on the proficiency level of efl learners and its evaluation through functional test

in fact, this study focused on the following questions: 1. is there any difference between the effect of functional/notional approach and the structural approaches to language teaching on the proficiency test of efl learners? 2. can a rather innovative language test referred to as "functional test" ge devised so so to measure the proficiency test of efl learners, and thus be as much reliable an...

Artificial Light at Night and Cancer: Global Study

Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study...

Effect of the Artificial Night with Facilitated Tucking and Artificial Night Alone on the Physiological Indices of Premature Infants

Background: Preterm birth and admission to neonatal intensive care unit as stressors can cause physiologicalinstability that may lead to prolong hospitalization and mortality. This study aimed to determine the effect of artificialnights and facilitated tucking on the physiological indices of premature infants. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 preterm ...

Artificial light at night advances avian reproductive physiology.

Artificial light at night is a rapidly increasing phenomenon and it is presumed to have global implications. Light at night has been associated with health problems in humans as a consequence of altered biological rhythms. Effects on wild animals have been less investigated, but light at night has often been assumed to affect seasonal cycles of urban dwellers. Using light loggers attached to fr...
